Unfortunately the rec field doesn’t have full size football posts and I have no intention of spending any money to buy one. (Yes there’s a plastic football goal set available from Amazon for $38) So we decided to DIY a football post. It’s super easy and cost about half the price!
Backyard Football Online
We’re using the football post for the birthday party games,and it makes a great prop too. But you can make one or two for your backyard just for the kids to play with!

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Football Post:
1 Bucket
1 piece 3/4″ PVC Pipe – I got ours from Home Depot and asked the nice folks there to cut it for me. Cut it in these sizes: 2 Pieces 18″, 2 Pieces 12″ and the left over piece should measure 5′
2 pieces 3/4″ elbow joints
1 piece 3/4″ T- joint
1 Box Plaster of Paris
Craft Glue
Spray paint in color of your choice (optional)
Here’s how you make it:
Spray paint the bucket in the color of your choice, we used black. Or if you prefer don’t paint it.

Spread glue inside the 2 elbow joints and the T-joint.
Insert a 12″ piece of pipe on either end of the T-joint.
Insert an 18″ piece of pipe in each elbow joint.
Insert elbow joints on either side of the pieces that are in the T-joint.
You should now have a “U” shaped piece.
Insert the 5′ pipe in the bottom opening of the T-joint.
Prepare the Plaster of Paris according to the directions on the box. It’s best to do this directly in the bucket you painted so you don’t have to transfer wet plaster in to it.
Make sure the plaster is all dissolved and wait for it to start thickening. About 5 minutes.
Once the plaster starts to thicken insert the bottom of the football post in the center of the plaster. Make sure it’s standing straight and not leaning to one side.
Hold in place until the plaster hardens around the tube. About 5-6 minutes. It’s very important that you hold the post steady while the plaster hardens. Moving the post around after placing it in the thickening plaster will result in the plaster not hardening around the post and the post will either lean or be wobbly.
Once the plaster hardens the football post is done! You can use it as a prop for a football party or just let the kids play with it in the backyard.
